Die Engländerin Mariana Starke (1762-1838) war eine erfolgreiche Theaterschriftstellerin, später auch Autorin eines verbreiteten Reiseführers für den Kontinent. Sie lebte sieebn Jahre in Italien, von 1792 bis 1798. Die hier beschriebene Reise führte Starken 1792 über die Alpen nach Nizza, 1794 setzte sie die Reise von Genua nach Pisa fort, 1796 nach Florenz, 1798 schließlich nach Rom.
