Die Engländerin Mary Holderness (Lebensdaten nicht bekannt) reiste Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts von Riga durch das westliche Russland und die Ukraine über Kiew und Odessa nach der Krim. Dort lebte sie vier Jahre, von 1816 bis 1820, im Ort Karagos. Sie beschreibt in diesem Auszug die Krim beschrieben, deren tatarische Bevölkerung und die russische Kolonisierung. »She provides a womans' viewpoint on items never seen by any ordinary tourist« (Harry W. Nerhood, No. 165).
1821 veröffentlichte Holderness »Notes relating to the manners and customs of the Crim Tatars; written during a four years' residence among that people« und 1823 »New Russia : Journey from Riga to the Crimea, by way of Kiev; with some Account of the Colonization, and the Manners and Customs of the Colonists of New Russia. To which are added, Notes relating to the Crim Tatars«.
