Kapitän Tench (1758-1833) segelte 1787-1788 mit dem ersten britischen Sträflingstransport unter Kommando von Arthur Phillip, Kapitän und erster Gouverneur von Australien, nach der australischen Botany-Bay. Sein Bericht umfasst die Seereise nach Australien, die Landung in der Botany Bay, die Einrichtung der Sträflingskolonie Port Jackson (später Sidney), Begegnungen mit australischen Ureinwohnern und Probleme der Sträflingsbehandlung.
